Eating disorders are a group of related conditions that cause serious emotional and physical problems. When one becomes so preoccupied with food and weight issues that it’s harder and harder to focus on other aspects of life, it may be an early sign of an eating disorder. Without treatment, eating disorders can take over a person’s life and lead to serious, potentially fatal medical complications.
The mental health community comes together to put a spotlight on eating disorders every year during Eating Disorders Awareness Week. As we are seeing with other mental health conditions this year, the pandemic has had an impact. The National Eating Disorders Association reports that hotline calls about eating disorders have increased 70-80 percent in recent months.
