NAMI COPE Program Training

NAMI COPE: Connecting Officers through Peer Education is a course designed to train law enforcement officers to facilitate support groups with the goal of improving officer wellness. Groups will provide an accepting group environment for discussion and support.

Training Dates

All trainings will run for two days from 9am to to 5pm.

How to Apply

NAMI California and State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) are focusing on the following areas to pilot the NAMI COPE Program: Alameda, Contra Costa, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Mateo, Yolo, San Joaquin, Amador, and El Dorado.

Communicate with your Agency Training Coordinator or Deputy Chief Officer to complete the NAMI COPE Agency Application.

Individual officers will need to complete a Registration and Fidelity Form that will be sent to them once we receive the Agency Application. Each officer will turn their form in to their Agency Training Coordinator or Deputy Chief Officer who will submit all forms in one email to NAMI California.

What to Expect

Wellness Programs for LE Officers (IGP)

This course is designed to train facilitators to lead support groups for law enforcement at POST participating agencies. This course will prepare individuals for facilitation of support groups using NAMI developed materials, tools, and supports. Course materials include facilitation guides, support groups materials including agendas, exercises, resources, and supports.

Virtual Training Format

The virtual training format for this course will be held through in a live, interactive Zoom platform. This virtual training will total 16 hours divided between two days. During the live session, NAMI CA staff will be online with the instructor during the course to assist in verifying student identities and ensure student participation in course activities, which include facilitated discussions, breakout groups and the use of the chat box for questions.

Registration and Participation

Students attending the course will be required prior authorization from their agency with a signed Agency application. They will be also be required to submit an individual application. NAMI CA staff will verify student registration in the course, prior to sending out course confirmation letters with a unique private access code for the live session. Students must be attached to an agency, using a departmental email and will be required to have a computer with a camera and microphone for their participation in the course. Prior to the start of the course, students will be held in a waiting room until student identities can be verified against the approve student roster. All student learning during the course will be verified through facilitated discussion with each other as well as with the instructor.

Breakout Rooms for Discussion

For small group work done in breakout rooms, the instructor will have the ability to move freely between the breakout rooms to observe group work and groups will report back in the main room on work products or discussions created in breakout rooms.

After Virtual Training

Pilot Support Groups will begin after certification of NAMI COPE Facilitators.
